Admission to PhD courses

The School offers PhD course in various areas of Mathematics, Statistics and Operations Research. The advertisement for admission appears in national newspapers.

The UGC-CSIR JRF qualified candidates or NBHM research awardees may be considered for admission any time during the year depending upon the availability of seats. The selection in such cases will be based on an interview.

Eligibility

For applying for the Ph.D.  Courses, a candidate should satisfy the following criterion:

Second class Masters degree in concerned or related subjects with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade.

The selection is through interview. The  interview carries 25 marks.

For the Ph.D. programme in Statistics the questions will be at the level of M.Sc. in the areas: Probability theory, Statistical Inference, Sampling techniques, Stochastic Processes, Linear Models, Design & Analysis of experiments, Multivariate analysis, Linear Programming.

For joining the  Ph.D. programme  in Operations Research, a person may appear for the admission test either in Pure/Applied Mathematics or Statistics

 Note that  candidates only with NET (without JRF)  MUST attend the written test.

Students admitted to the Ph.D. programme are required to pass a few courses recommended by the School in the first year and have to face a comprehensive viva at the end of the 1st year.  Only those candidates who qualify in the viva are eligible to continue their registration in the Ph.D programme of the School.  They are also expected to take part in the weekly Colloquium / Seminar of the School.
